deception, Nicholas Rossi- a United States fugitive who allegedly faked his own death and assumed a false identity in the United Kingdom - has been found guilty of rape in a Utah court.

The 38-year-old, whose legal name is Nicholas Alahverdian, was convicted on Wednesday (13 August 2025) following a three-day trial in Salt Lake County, where a jury of four men and four women deliberated for more than eight hours before delivering their verdict.

Rossi showed no visible emotion as the guilty finding was read out, marking the first of two rape trials he faces in the state.

Rossi, born in Rhode Island on 11 July 1987 to Diana and Jack Alahverdian, later adopted his stepfather David Rossi's surname.

He grew up in the state's foster care system and became a vocal critic of Rhode Island's Department of Children, Youth and Families, positioning himself as an advocate for foster youth.

However, his past includes prior convictions: in 2008, he was found guilty of sex-related offences in Ohio, requiring him to register as a sex offender, a requirement he allegedly failed to meet in Rhode Island.

He also faces fraud charges in Ohio, and investigators have linked him to at least a dozen aliases used over the years to evade capture.

The saga began in earnest when Rossi fled the United States around 2017, amid investigations into Credit Card Fraud and Sexual Assault allegations.

In February 2020, an online obituary, which is believed to have been authored by Rossi himself, claimed he had succumbed to late-stage Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma on 29 February, with poignant last words: "Fear not and run towards the bliss of the sun".

Authorities, including Rhode Island State Police, his former lawyer, and a foster family, immediately expressed scepticism, suspecting it was a ruse to escape imprisonment for his crimes.

A priest was even advised against holding a memorial mass, as "Nicholas isn't dead".

By this time, Rossi had relocated to the United Kingdom. In early 2020, under the alias Arthur Brown, he married Miranda Knight in Bristol, later adopting the name Arthur Knight and moving to Glasgow.

 <img
He claimed to be a professor at the University Of Glasgow and maintained a fabricated backstory as an Irish orphan who had grown up in Dublin care homes before fleeing to London as a teenager.

His wife, described as distraught and in denial, believed the police had the wrong man, noting his consistent thick Irish accent and lack of family references.

style="text-align:left;display:block;">Rossi's elaborate charade unravelled in December 2021 when he was hospitalised with COVID-19 complications at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow. Medical Staff recognised his distinctive tattoos from an Interpol wanted notice, leading to his arrest.

In British courts, Rossi appeared in a wheelchair, often wearing a three-piece suit and oxygen mask, speaking with a British or Irish accent, and repeatedly sacking lawyers while delivering rambling monologues.

He insisted he was Arthur Knight, a victim of mistaken identity and a frame-up, but could not produce a birth certificate or passport.

Edinburgh Sheriff Norman McFadyen ruled in November 2022 that his claims were "implausible" and "fanciful", confirming his identity as Rossi.

After losing appeals, Scotland's justice secretary signed an extradition order in September 2023, and Rossi was flown back to the US in January 2024.

In a Utah bail hearing in October 2024, he finally admitted Arthur Knight was an alias but denied fleeing to avoid arrest, claiming it was to escape unspecified "credible threats".

The rape charges stem from two separate incidents in Utah in 2008, uncovered in 2018 when DNA from preserved rape kits was tested as part of a state initiative to clear backlogs.

In the Salt Lake County case, for which Rossi was convicted, the victim (only referred to as "MS" in court) met him online via Craigslist while recovering from a traumatic Brain Injury and living with her parents.

Their relationship escalated rapidly: they dated and became engaged within two weeks.

"MS" testified that Rossi became controlling, dictating her clothing, restricting her driving, and borrowing money (including £800 to avoid eviction) and funds for engagement rings, which she financed through debt.

After she ended the engagement, Rossi allegedly raped her in his apartment bedroom following a heated argument.

She did not report it immediately, citing dismissive responses from her parents, but came forward 13 years later after seeing media reports of another accusation against him.

Prosecutors portrayed Rossi as a manipulative predator who exploited her vulnerability.

The defence, led by lawyer MacKenzie Potter, argued the case was like an "old puzzle from a thrift shop" with missing pieces, suggesting "MS" fabricated the allegation out of resentment over financial losses and Rossi's later media attention.

 <img

Rossi declined to testify and appeared in court in a wheelchair with an oxygen tank.

He now faces sentencing on 20 October 2025, with a potential term of five years to life for the first-degree felony.

A second trial is scheduled for September 2025 in Utah County, involving another 2008 allegation from a woman, only referred to as "KP", who met Rossi on MySpace at the age of 21.

She testified as a witness in the first trial, claiming Rossi used her credit card without permission to buy a £320 computer, then raped her when she confronted him at his Orem apartment.

"KP" reported the assault to police at the time, completing a sexual assault kit, but delays in testing meant Rossi was not identified until a decade later.

Rossi has pleaded not guilty and countered that she raped him and threatened his life.

Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill commended "MS" for her 'courage and patience' in coming forward and confronting her attacker, emphasising the challenges of extraditing Rossi.

 <img
