Merseyside Police are responding to a serious road traffic incident in Liverpool City Centre this evening.

At approximately 18:00 on Monday 26 May, authorities were alerted to a collision involving a car and multiple pedestrians on Water Street. 

The vehicle involved remained at the scene, and a male suspect is currently in custody.

Emergency Services are on site, managing the situation.

Further details are yet to be released as the investigation continues.

At 19:33 BST, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer posted a statement about the incident on X from his @Keir_Starmer account.

Sir Keir Starmer, said: 

​"The scenes in Liverpool are appalling — my thoughts are with all those injured or affected.  I want to thank the police and emergency services for their swift and ongoing response to this shocking incident.  I'm being kept updated on developments and ask that we give the police the space they need to investigate".
