Accident and Emergency Departments in the North of Britain have recorded nearly 2.5 million waits exceeding the four-hour target since Scottish National Party's government last met their own standard for emergency care, new analysis has revealed.

Figures show that 2,442,699 patients experienced delays of more than four hours in Accident & Emergency between 12 July 2020 and early July 2026.

During the same period, 774,841 patients waited over eight hours, while 320,860 endured waits longer than 12 hours.

Scottish Government's target requires 95 per cent of patients to be seen within four hours.

However, this benchmark has not been achieved since the height of the COVID-19 Pandemic, despite repeated assurances from ministers that improvements were being made.
The findings emerge on the sixth anniversary of the last time the target was met.

Long waits have become increasingly common.

Scottish Conservative health spokesman Miles Briggs has described the situation as a national scandal, arguing that successive health secretaries have allowed extended delays to become normalised.

He has warned that such waits are contributing to avoidable harm and tragic outcomes, despite the dedication of NHS staff.

Miles Briggs has urged the current Health Secretary, Angela Constance, to prioritise resources for frontline care, reduce bureaucracy, and cut middle management layers to alleviate pressures.

He contends that after nearly two decades in power, SNP's approach to health service management has left NHS Scotland in a state of permanent crisis.
Health leaders and opposition parties have repeatedly called for a comprehensive review of emergency care provision.

The Scottish Government has previously acknowledged challenges within Accident & Emergency services and pointed to ongoing investment, workforce expansion plans, and reform initiatives designed to improve flow through Medical Facilities.

However, the latest statistics illustrate that significant progress is still required to restore performance to pre-pandemic levels and meet established standards.

As pressures on Emergency Departments continue, the debate over National Health Service priorities is expected to intensify in the coming months.
