Tonight is the first episode of a new series of the BAFTA-Award-winning Ambulance, filmed earlier this year at an unprecedentedly difficult time for the NHS.

Cameras focus on a new cast of characters drawn from the staff of North West England Ambulance Service, as they care for the 1.4 million people of Merseyside.

The whole of the country is in lockdown as crews across Merseyside book on for the day shift.

In the Regional Operational Coordinating Centre, plans are well underway to tackle the immediate threat to life being posed by Storm Christoph, which is about to rage through the North West of England.

The storm adds yet more pressure to a service already battling the peak of the CoronaVirus Pandemic.

Crewmates Emily and Jo are first of the morning shift to be dispatched to a patient who is not breathing and is feared dead.

This is the call Jo dreads, as she has only recently lost her mother.

She fears it will have a profound emotional impact on her, even though she is saved from attending the scene.

With little time to recover Jo and Emily are dispatched to reports of a road traffic collision caused by the storm.

Paramedic Chris is also sent to manage the scene.

Once on scene, the patient is found to have had a lucky escape, but must still be taken to a nearby medical facility - which leaves Chris reflecting once again on how his fellow scousers have faced the pandemic.

Across Liverpool, ambulance crew Sarah and Mark are dispatched to their second patient of the day - a woman who is struggling to breathe.

The patient is initially reluctant to attend a local medical facility but after some gentle persuasion agrees to go.

Once safely on board the ambulance her gratitude for the crew and the NHS shines through, as Sarah and Mark modestly shrug off her compliments.

Five hours into the shift, and the team have already treated over 290 suspected COVID19-positive patients.

Emily and Jo's fifth call out of the day is to a COVID19-positive patient.

Whilst on scene, it turns out Covid has rippled through the family and is continuing its spread to them all.

There are now 258 patients waiting for an ambulance and the pressure on the service is building with no signs of the storm easing.

Emily and Jo are on scene with their third covid patient of the day.

As Emily tries to find a way to keep the patient out of hospital, a passerby hands the crew-mates a gift, leaving Emily to reflect on how hard times have been.

Overnight, Storm Christoph has continued to intensify, with river levels throughout the North West of England rising the service is at risk of becoming overwhelmed.

The news that there have also been a further 1820 CoronaVirus deaths in the past 24 hours sends shockwaves through the ambulance team.

Ambulance crew Kerry and Quinten are dispatched to their first patient of the night.

The patient who has had a fall at home, and as a result of the pressure on the service he has been kept waiting for an ambulance for five hours.

As the weather continues to worsen, there are now another 299 patients waiting for an ambulance.

Emily and Jo are dispatched to their first patient of the night, a woman who is distressed because she can hear ringing in her ears.

Paramedic Chris is dispatched to another elderly patient.

When he arrives he finds she has fallen out of bed. He soon manages to get the patient back on her feet and cheers her up as they share stories of Liverpool in days gone-by.

As the floods continue to worsen, roads are forced to close which causes further delays in response times.

Sarah and Mark are dispatched to a category one call for a patient in cardiac arrest but are forced to make a number of diversions along the way.

Across town, Emily and Jo are also in a race against time to get to another patient in cardiac arrest.

Despite dashing to treat the patient they aren’t able to save their life - another stark reminder for Emily and Jo of the fragility of life, and once again it throws all their work during the CoronaVirus Pandemic into sharp focus.

The weekend night shifts begin with 45 ambulance crews standing ready to help the people of Merseyside.

A car has overturned at a roundabout, and the driver has fled the scene.  Before long, he returns and becomes their patient.

Before long all the ambulances have been called out.  Senior paramedic, Tony, is working alone when he’s called to a patient who is believed to have had a fit.  Tony decides the patient must go to a nearby medical facility, but with no ambulances available, he and the patient are forced to begin a 40-minute wait in the cold.

Tony is dispatched again when a caller reports that a man is slumped in his car in the city centre.  While en route, the driver comes round and turns on the good samaritan who made the call to get him help.  When Tony arrives he finds the caller is now the patient and is in the back of the ambulance needing emergency treatment following the attack.  As he is being driven to the nearest major trauma centre, things take a further turn for the worse.

This evening's episode begins with an unusual job for advanced paramedic Kirsten.  A shout has come in from the police for a burglar who has injured himself while trying to escape from a house he was burgling.  As Kirsten arrives to support the crews already at scene, she finds he is in agony with a nasty open fracture on his leg.

It's an hour into the shift when a call for a patien - who is 27 weeks pregnant and in a lot of pain - takes priority, as she could be in early labour. Kelsey and Dave are immediately dispatched.  On arrival the patient explains she’s a survivor of spine cancer and her baby is something of a miracle.

Two hours into the shift, the crews have already attended 96 patients.  A category two call comes in for a patient struggling to breathe.  Gareth and Gabby are the closest crew and are immediately dispatched.  The patient suffers from pneumonia and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and is struggling with her breathing.

Whilst on way to the nearby medical facility, Gabby hears about the patient's late husband.  This brings up memories of Gabby losing her dad at young age.

Soon after three o’clock in the afternoon an emergency call comes in for a fall from height.  It's a high-priority call and a doctor and paramedic team in a helicopter from North West (England) Air Ambulance are dispatched, along with an additional two Critical Care Units and police.  The call has come from a school where the pupil is believed to have fallen from a bridge.

While the team are on scene at the school another high-priority call comes in for a child hit by a car. Kelsey and Dave are the nearest crew and are diverted to the job with advanced paramedic Kirsten also dispatched.  It's another chaotic scene for Kirsten as she helps Kelsey and Dave assess the patient.

It is the start of a new shift and a call comes in for a motorbike accident on the motorway.  Advanced Paramedic Kirsten is immediately dispatched, but when she’s told where the incident is, she realises her partner Ben has just taken the same route on his motorbike.  It is a worrying journey to the scene for Kirsten.

While Kirsten is dealing with the motorbike accident on the motorway, Gabby and Gareth are dispatched to a category one call for a person who has been hit by a locomotive.  It's the 293rd high-category call of the evening.  On arrival Gabby and Gareth must wait until the rail is deemed safe for them to approach, even though they know there is a patient who they might be able to save.  But, as the clock ticks closer to 22:00, it’s confirmed that the person hit by the train is deceased.

It’s a busy shift for high-priority calls as Kirsten is dispatched to another road traffic collision - this time involving three cars.  It is another busy scene for Kirsten to manage.  While she’s checking how many injured passengers are at the scene a colleague alerts her to a previously overlooked car that may have someone trapped and injured inside.  She investigates the vehicle and finds a patient in cardiac arrest with a suspected collapsed lung.

It’s a big weekend for the city of Liverpool with thousands of extra visitors expected to flood into The New York of Europe to attend the Grand National weekend, for race of the season.  North West (England) Ambulance Service is putting on extra resources to cover the event as well as care for all the people of Merseyside.

Paramedic crew and sisters Danielle and Stacey are stationed at Aintree racecourse for Ladies' Day, while Chelsey & Paul, Mo & Tony, and Anthony & Mandy are on the road ready to serve those not at the races.

Mo and Tony are sent to a train station for patient who has fallen down some stairs.  It appears that Ladies' Day shenanigans have begun early - the patient tripped after checking out the ladies in their best outfits on their way to the the world's famous racecourse.

While Danielle & Stacey are in place at the starting line at Aintree, Mo & Tony are sent to another job for a baby that’s fallen from a pram.  Her mother is clearly under the influence of alcohol.  The call has come from Merseyside Constabulary after witnessing the fall on CCTV.  As Mo and Tony examine the injured child, they find the injuries are worse than first implied by the child’s mum.

Elsewhere, Anthony and Mandy are dispatched to a CAT 1 patient at a nursing home.  The patient has been found on the floor in a confused state after fainting.  With the patient having a low heart rate the crew decide it’s best to take her to the nearest medical facility for an emergency evaluation.

Over at Aintree we’re in position for the last race of the day, and it’s not long before Danielle and Stacey are sent to their first human causality after a fall from a horse.  He’s a previous winner of The Randox Health Grand National and the fall appears to have broken his ankle, so he’ll miss the big race the next day.

It’s the day of The Randox Health Grand National, one of the biggest days of the year for Liverpool and the eyes of the world are trained on the city.  Chelsey and Paul are dispatched to a five-year-old who has fallen from the sofa.  Leaving nothing to chance they transport the patient to Alder Hey Hospital.  While on the back of the ambulance the family do a call to prayer - something Chelsey joins in with as she recently converted to Islam.

Elsewhere Mo & Tony are with an elderly patient who is need of some care and attention.  It falls on Mo to offer hairdressing services and a trip to a local medical facility to be examined.  Anthony and Wendy are sent to a patient who has an injury to her foot, which is bleeding.

The excited atmosphere builds across the city as the start time for the Grand National edges closer.  Chelsey and Paul are sent to a patient with ineffective breathing, while sisters Danielle and Stacey are poised at the side of the race track to catch any of the jockeys who have disconnected from their horse.

Chelsey & Paul arrive to discover the patient is in cardiac arrest while simultaneously Daniel & Stacey get sent to a jockey who’s fallen in the big race.  We see the highs and lows of both jobs running in parallel, a vivid demonstration of what the ambulance service deal with day to day, even on a day of excitement and celebration for the city.

While the Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is in progress for Chelsey and Paul's patient, another traumatic plea for help is received in control, this time from a frantic partner of a lady giving birth.  Whilst that call is ongoing, the resuscitation is terminated.

Back in control, the call is ongoing for the patient in labour, with the father on the line becoming more frantic - the team must help the baby to be delivered.

This episode - to be broadcast Thursday 11 June 2020 on BBC One at 21:00 - joins the team in control, whilst an urgent call is in progress from a husband whose wife is in cardiac arrest.

A doctor and paramedic team from North West (England) Air Ambulance are immediately dispatched to assist on the job.  Despite best efforts from the team they cannot revive the patient and they have to make the heartbreaking decision to terminate resuscitation.

Back in the control room a call is in progress for a patient suffering chest pains as a result of cocaine overdose.  Chris and V are dispatched to a category three call for a patient who has fallen, however once the patient is safely treated it's the couple’s dogs who become the focus of the paramedics' attention.

It’s the start of a new shift.  The blue team take over in control, where there are already 19 category two jobs waiting for assistance.

It’s not long before the next priority call comes in from Merseyside Constabulary.  A male, who has not been seen in approximately seven days, has been discovered and is not breathing.  Mandy and Dave are immediately dispatched, but on arrival they find the patient is deceased and has been for some time.  Although they deal with death a lot as part of the job, it's clear this particular incident affects the crew.

Angela and Jenny are dispatched to see patient Margaret, who may have had a stroke.  She lives on her own, and although they are able to rule out a time-critical stroke, they must make a decision on whether to take her to a local medical facility for evaluation.

As the night continues the Emergency Operations Centre personnel have so far received 1,943 calls for an emergency critical care transportation.  Mandy and Dave have picked themselves up and are ready to be dispatched to assist a crew with a patient who’s fallen in the bath.  He has been in the bath for a couple of hours with his wife unable to move him.  On scene, it is clear the couple need extra support at home and Mandy tries to help them get this assistance.

In the control room personnel are still feeling the pressure of the night as the category one calls start to come in.  Angela and Jenny are dispatched to an overdose patient who has discharged themselves from a nearby medical facilty, whilst back in the control room calls are coming in for a road traffic collision.  Angela and Jenny pass the incident on the way to their job and stop to assist.  With two people injured at scene, Doctor Ian and Paramedic Rob are also dispatched.

While the team on the ground treat patients involved in the road traffic accident, Mandy and Dave are dispatched to a male who’s injured his foot under a cherry picker.  The patient must be transferred to the nearest medical facility for a full evaluation, which provides time for Mandy to get to know her patient.  Mandy struggles to hide her emotions as he reveals what has been going on in his life, completely unrelated to his foot injury.

In the early hours of the night shift, viewers are reunited with Chris and V, who are keeping themselves awake with a sing-song, when they’re dispatched to a category two call for a 99 year-old patient with difficulty breathing.  Their patient has been suffering from a chest infection but is worried she’s nearly at the end of her life.  Paramedic Chris tries to reassure that she’s going to be fine - she needs to be for her 100th birthday party that’s coming up.
